Chapter fifteen began the presentations for this week. This chapter was about the use of fractions in the classroom. The chapter and discussion in the class stressed the importance of practicing fractions in different formats (pies-circles, rectangles, grids, etc.). The activities that this group provided were coloring a variety of fractions, drawing them, making equivalent fractions out of many shapes, and using money to represent fractions. I liked figuring out the same fractions by using shapes because it made it more interesting for me to play with fractions. I think students can find it neat to do the same and also write it in many ways (½, shading one part of a circle, rectangle, or triangle, 1:2, etc.) The chapter presented after was fourteen and that was about algebraic thinking. This group’s activities were very challenging and very interesting because some of them made me think and work hard in order to find the solutions. I liked the poster containing many math problems and we had to hurry and solve them before the other group and choose with problem was either true or false. I had to work out the problem in my head quickly so that my group finished before the other. I feel that these sort of activities get their minds working! The last chapter was sixteen and it was about using strategies to estimate in diverse situations. This group went out and beyond by preparing wonderful activities for the class. They provided many ways to practice estimating like; using strips with different lengths, counters, circle graphs and just numbers. These centers were good to at making us think and/or viewing other ways to practice estimation. The presentations for this week were great, insightful, and very interactive!
